5.1. Introducing the Veins of the Thorax

Overview

The veins of the thorax are best described in a structured way, much like the arteries. However, veins drain towards and then into the heart, so they can be described as draining inferiorly (from the head and neck), medially (from the arms) or draining superiorly (from the abdomen, pelvis and lower limbs). It might sound obvious, but don't forget that the blood in veins is running in the opposite direction to the blood in the arteries.
