7.6. Surfaces of the Heart


The heart has three surfaces and an apex. These are described below and in the accompanying diagram.

Diaphragmatic surface
Faces the diaphragm.

Sternocostal surface
Faces the ribs and costal cartilages.

Base (also called posterior surface)
Faces backward, towards the vertebral column.

The most anterior and inferior tip of the left ventricle, lying at the level of the fifth left intercostal space.
