7.12. Coronary Arteries on the Posterior Aspect of the Heart

The Right and Left Coronary Arteries (Posterior Aspect)

On the posterior aspect of the heart, we can see the continuation of the right coronary artery:
  • AV nodal artery, which supplies the AV node.
  • Posterior interventricular branch*, which supplies the posterior aspect of both ventricular walls.
On the posterior aspect of the heart, we can see the continuation of the circumflex branch:
  • First and second left obtuse marginal branches, which supply the wall of the left ventricle.
*Note the variation of the origin of the posterior interventricular branch in human beings (in 70% of people, it arises from the RCA, in 20% of people, it arises from the LCA, in 10% it arises from both the RCA and LCA).
